General Competition Rules

  • Deadline to apply and submit a recording is Nov. 11, 2011, midnight, EST (no exceptions!).
  • Applications and recordings will be submitted online and can be uploaded only after the 2012 FSW membership dues and each competition application fee has been paid.  (Link to upload music file can be found on your registration receipt which is emailed once registration is complete.)
  • If entering more than one competition a separate application and music file must be completed for each event.
  •  Recording should be a .mp3 file. Only one file should be uploaded. If more than one requirement is listed,  they must be recorded in the exact order listed. If you need help combining files, see free program  http://wavepad.en.softonic.com/
  • Music file MUST be named in the following manner: use first two letters of your first name, first two letters of your middle name and first four letters of your last name. Use "x" for any missing letters.  Example: Jane Sally Sun would be jasasunx.mp3.  Note: files such as " filename.mp3.mp3" will not play, rename the file with a single .mp3.
  •  The recording should demonstrate the highest possible audio quality so your performance can be evaluated successfully.
  •  Only continuous performances of entire works or movements are allowed. Do not edit or electronically alter the recording.
  •  Results will be available online at the FSW website on or before January 7, 2012.
  •  Never upload a video recording.
  •  Accompanists are the responsibility of the finalists for the Young Artist and Collegiate Soloist Competitions. Master class performers may use the staff accompanist or provide one at their own expense.
  •  Flutists may enter more than one competition but can only be selected to perform in one event at the flute fair. Note: Student Honors Competition do NOT perform at the 2012 flute fair.
  •  A preliminary or final round performance in excess of the maximum performance time allotted will disqualify the applicant.
  •  The decision of the judges is final.
  • Incomplete applications will be subject to disqualification.
  • All competitions, EXCEPT the Young Artist Competition are limited to performers who live or attend school in Mid-Atlantic States (Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina, West Virginia, Washington, DC, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania). The Young Artist Competition has no residency restrictions.




  The Young Artist Competition

The Young Artist Competition is for outstanding flutists, under the age of 30 (as of February 1, 2012), who have completed an undergraduate degree at a college, university, or conservatory.  Finalists for the Young Artist Competition will be selected, on the basis of their recorded audition, to compete on Saturday at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair.  Cash prizes ($1,000, $750 and $500) will be awarded. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to participate. There is no residency requirement. All competitions are subject to general competition rules.

Requirements: 

  •  A recording containing the following selections in exact order listed below:
i)       Bach's Sonata in C Major (BWV 1033) Andante-Presto and Allegro (no repeats)
ii)    Repertoire of the applicant's choice, not to exceed 10 minutes. All works for flute and keyboard must be recorded using both instruments.
  • A list of repertoire of the applicant's choice to be performed, if selected as a finalist. The repertoire should cover at least two periods of music and begin with the required Bach selections from the preliminary round.  The final repertoire list cannot be changed. Total maximum time is 20 (twenty) minutes including required music and time between movements.
  • Submit an online application, pay $30 application fee, be a 2012 FSW member (dues can be paid online) and upload an audio recording. 

  Student Honors Competition

This competition is for outstanding flutists in grade 12 and under. Winners will be selected on the basis of their recording. There are three divisions: Senior High School (grade 10-12), Junior High (grade 7-9) and Elementary (grade 6 or younger). Cash and other awards will be presented to the winners at the flute fair. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to participate in the same division. The decision of the judges is final. See residency requirement listed under general competition rules. All works for flute and keyboard must be recorded using both instruments. All competitions are subject to general competition rules. Student Honors Competition winners do not perform at the 2012 flute fair and can be selected in other competitions.

 Requirements:

  • A recording containing:

Senior Division- Hanson's Serenade, Carol Fischer

Junior Division -F. Doppler's Mazurka de Salon, Op.16, (from Three Salon Pieces) Little Piper

Elementary Division-Catherine McMichael's Trillium, Alry

  • Submit an online application, pay $15 application fee, be a 2012 FSW member (dues can be paid online) and upload an audio recording.

Mid-Atlantic High School Flute Choir

The Mid-Atlantic High School Flute Choir is open to all high school students in grade 9-12. Members of this choir are selected on the basis of a recorded audition. The choir will rehearse during the Flute Fair weekend, culminating with a concert. Selected choir members are required to be in attendance at all scheduled rehearsals over the weekend, no exception.  Music written for flute and keyboard must be recorded with both instruments. See residency requirement listed under all applicants. All competitions are subject to general competition rules.

 Requirements:

  • A recording containing the following selections in this order:
a) a chromatic scale, three octaves, sixteenth notes at m.m. q = 80 , articulation: slur up the scale, tongue two/slur two down the scale
b) LaCerda's Poemeto (Tempo Primo), required by all applicants
c) Optional recording for those wishing to play piccolo: Lombardo's Winsey (Lombardo Music).
  • Submit an online application, pay $15 application fee, be a 2012 FSW member (dues can be paid online) and upload an audio recording.

Guest Artist Master Class

Flutists of the highest caliber will be selected to perform in the classes at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair. Music written for flute and keyboard must be recorded using both instruments. Flutists performing on the 2011 guest artist master class are not eligible to participate in the 2012 master class.  See residency requirement listed under general rules. All competitions are subject to general competition rules.

Requirements:

  • A recording containing the music the applicant wishes to perform in the class, if selected. Selection must not exceed 10 minutes
  •  Submit an online application, pay $10 application fee, be a 2012 FSW member (dues can be paid online) and upload an audio recording.

Student Master Class

Young flutists will be selected to perform for the class, taught by local artists and teachers, at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair. The class is open to all students in grade 12 and under. Music written for flute and keyboard must be recorded with both instruments, piano or Smart Music TM is acceptable. Flutists who performed in a student master class at the 2011 flute fair are not eligible to participate in the 2012 class. See residency requirement listed under general rules. All competitions are subject to general competition rules.

 Requirements:

  • A recording containing music of your choice, not to exceed 5 minutes. Selected performers will receive music selection for the class by January 7, 2012.
  • Submit an online application, pay $10 application fee, be a 2012 FSW member (dues can be paid online) and upload an audio recording.

 Collegiate Soloist Competition

The Collegiate Soloist Competition is for outstanding flutists, under the age of 28 (as of February 1, 2012), which are currently pursuing an undergraduate degree at a college, university, or conservatory. Finalists will be selected, on the basis of their recorded audition, to compete at the Flute Fair. Cash prizes will be awarded. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to participate. All competitions are subject to general competition rules.

Requirements:

  •   Preliminary Round: Submit a recording containing the following selections in this order:
i)       Mozart's Concerto  in G, first movement (mm. 1-91)
ii)    Repertoire of the applicant's choice, not to exceed 10 minutes. All works for flute and keyboard must be recorded using both instruments.

 

  • Final Round Music: CPE Bach’s Unaccompanied Sonata in a minor and Ian Clarke’s The Great Train Race
  •  Submit an online application, pay $15 application fee, be a 2012 FSW member (dues can be paid online) and upload an audio recording.
